Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
You may need a tooth extraction if you are suffering from an infection or injury. Another possible reason a tooth might need to be pulled is if the tooth is severely decayed and can’t be restored. Some patients need extractions in preparation for orthodontics as well. During your consultation, we will perform a thorough examination, then take X-rays to determine if an extraction is necessary.
What’s Involved in a Tooth Extraction?
The first step of your extraction will be to numb the site to keep you comfortable. You will feel pressure during the procedure but not pain. Once you are completely numb, your tooth will be removed. If the tooth is impacted under the gum, it may take a little bit longer as the dentist cuts away gum to reach the tooth. The whole procedure will be over before you know it.
How to Care for Your Mouth After Getting a Tooth Pulled
- If you are experiencing pain, ask about over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers.
- Avoid exercise and smoking.
- Avoid touching the area as the blood clot is important to avoid dry socket, a painful complication that can result from the blood clot coming dislodged.
- Keep hydrated, eat soft foods, and take it easy until your mouth has healed.
- Follow the dentist’s instructions for care.
